Cowdenbeath v Bonnyrigg Rose – Play Off Final

Cowdenbeath have been relegated from the SPFL following a 4-0 aggregate defeat against Bonnyrigg Rose.
The Blue Brazil slipped to a 1-0 reverse on Saturday, with a Neil Martyniuk penalty enough to ensure there would be no miraculous comeback in the pyramid playoff final.

The real damage was done seven days prior as the Lowland League champions claimed a comprehensive 3-0 victory at New Dundas Park. Roared on by more than 2,000 supporters, that game underlined the potential of the Lothian outfit.

And Robbie Horn’s men will deservedly take their place in League 2 next season.

By contrast, Cowdenbeath — who joined the Scottish Football League in 1905 — face a challenging future in the Lowland League.

Is it true that Cowdenbeath spent 117 unbroken years in the Scottish League, until Len decided to start a thread about them and cursed them to eternity?

What happens if Celtic B or Rangers B get promoted?

Could you potentially have 2 sets of both clubs in the SPL? 🤔

Berwick Rangers went down to this hell hole around 3-4 years ago and they are finding it difficult to get out.
Farewell COO! Keep on practising your kick and rush tactics and you might get lucky.

MESSAGE TO OUR FANS AND OUR COMMUNITY

Firstly, we have already passed on our congratulations to Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic on their play-off win and have wished them well for the future.

Secondly, and most importantly for Cowdenbeath FC, we thank you all for your most loyal support both yesterday, all season and indeed always. We are proud of our community and to be your football club. In our 142 year history there have been many ups and downs and of course yesterday represented one of the lows. Days of great joy and some of sadness are very much the lot of most football followers. Self-pity though won’t do us much good so today we begin anew – the first day of the rest of our lives as the saying goes. Changes and challenges lie ahead but with your ongoing help and commitment we will focus on ‘bouncebackability and the Blue Brazil’. We are indeed encouraged by the depth and warmth of support we see for the club on Social Media and from messages sent to us.

We of course now immediately have to take a bit of stock and deal with a number of key matters. But as regards the bigger picture, we have already had meetings with a number of fans and other parties in recent weeks regarding being involved in playing a part and bringing fresh ideas and impetus to the club. That process is continuing. We are looking in some ways too to evoke the spirit of the famous Cowdenbeath Cooperative and the core part it played in our community. Elements of a cooperative approach involving the wide engagement of a range of people can help shape our future – an ethos whereby many can play an active part be it large or small at differing levels. MERIT is an acronym we are using – key aspects to refresh the club being centred on Money, Energy, Resources, Ideas, Time.

If you can, please BE involved – that is the spirit of our community and our fans.

Why do all the sides with a compass point in their name which are any good have "West"?

Even Preston NORTH End are rarely any kop.

Shame on the Scotsman reporting there.

The "Abyss"...no need to be catastrophic about these things.

I consider it an opportunity to put MERIT into warp speed and wipe out these lower league fuckers once and for all.

(Particularly the Strollers . A hard rain/sleet is going to hit those fuckers when the COO are next in town)

Lowland League: How it will look in season 2022/23

The Lowland League will have a different look next season, with champions Bonnyrigg Rose swapping places with Cowdenbeath, one club changing its name and home ground, a new side coming up from the leagues below and the prospect of two different B teams taking part as ‘guest clubs’.

The fifth tier of Scottish football’s pyramid in the south of the country has come in for criticism in recent months over not increasing promotion slots for clubs in tier six below and for continuing with B teams, but there will be changes.

Cowdenbeath join East Stirlingshire and Berwick Rangers to form a trio of former SPFL clubs who have been sucked into to the Lowland League as a consequence of the pyramid play-off system that’s been in place since 2014-15.

Founder members Vale of Leithen, who finished bottom this season with just five points from 34 matches, have been relegated to the East of Scotland League for next term.

Their place will be taken by either Tranent, Darvel or St Cuthbert Wanderers, champions of the East, West of Scotland League respectively.

The three-way round robin play-off begins on Sunday when Tranent host St Cuthberts, who then host Darvel in midweek. Tranent then head to Ayrshire to face Darvel on Saturday, May 28.

The final piece of the Lowland League jigsaw for next season has still to be decided after clubs voted to allow two ‘guest teams’ in expectation that Celtic and Rangers would automatically take up the B team places, only for Hearts to make an official application to and throw a spanner in the works.

Lowland League officials subsequently asked members about admitting all three B teams, but that would have taken the league up to 19 teams and was defeated in a vote.

Clubs may now have to vote again on which two B teams to admit and who to leave out when they meet at the end of this month. It could all get a bit messy.

The other change is a club name and a ground. Broomhill have announced that they will change their name next season to Open Goal Broomhill after a new partnership with the football media brand, with podcast host becoming the new manager. Open Goal Broomhill are also understood to be moving from Alloa to Cumbernauld to ground-share at Broadwood.

It is the second name change in 12 months for the club which originally joined the Lowland League as BSC Glasgow in 2014 but have played at Alloa’s Indodrill Stadium since 2016. After splitting last summer from the multi-sports BSC Glasgow club from which it was formed, the club was renamed Broomhill FC.

The is how the league is shaping up for next season, with a few questions still to be answered
